Who are the people in our neighborhood?

February 6, 2015   – No Comments

At the cross roads of the Russian River and Dry Creek valleys, and only a mile away from downtown Healdsburg, Madrona Manor is the ideal starting point for endless adventures.  Two of our favorite destinations, DaVero Farms and Winery and Dragonfly Floral are also our closest neighbors. These two gems define the uniqueness and beauty of our little section of Westside Road.

DaVero Winery

DaVero Farms and Winery sits on the corner just opposite Madrona Manor’s archway.  This picture perfect spot epitomizes everything that is wonderful about our locale.  With a tasting room surrounded by lush vineyards, beautiful vegetable and flower gardens, free roaming chickens and some lovable pigs, this is a down-to-earth spot to enjoy more than just wine.

Husband and Wife team Ridgely Evers and Colleen McGlynn started growing olives on their neighboring home farm over 30 years ago and soon came up with a simple mission: “Grow what belongs here. Be patient.” The resulting olive oil has been touted as some of the best in the world and often appears on Madrona Manor’s menu. In the years that followed the patience paid off as the farm took shape and vineyards were also planted. Somewhat of an iconoclast in the area, DaVero chose to plant only Mediterranean varietals to match the climate of our area. Two of our favorites are Sagrantino and Vermentino. The vineyards are wild with beautiful undergrowth and surrounded by fruit trees and vegetables.

DaVero Tasting Room

A visit to the tasting room offers a chance to sample wines, olive oils and many other farm made items, including some of the best jams we’ve tasted.

Dragonfly Floral

Another iconoclast in the area, Bonnie Z of Dragonfly Floral bought six acres in 1990 for her family home and farm and immediately started yanking out all of the grapes.  This created a stir in the area as most land purchases of the time involved planting vineyards, not taking them out.  The resulting farm was truly Bonnie’s vision however and has become a haven for flora and fauna.

Dragonfly Farm

Originally a vegetable farm, Dragonfly soon gravitated toward flowers.  After a local business owner asked Bonnie to arrange flowers for a wedding the niche really took hold and the rest is history. 25 years later, the organic gardens are full of unusual flowers including 1,500 roses from antique to modern.  Bonnie, her daughter Carlisle and an amazing team of floral designers and farmers plant, grow and create on site. With their specialty being weddings, Dragonfly has become the top choice for couples getting married at Madrona Manor.

A perfect spot for a picnic the farm also features a duck pond, farm stand and flower shop.
